Cantonese sentence-final particles and the CP domain*

چکیده

This paper proposes two syntactic positions for the wide range of Cantonese sentence-final particles that occur in the CP domain. The first position that I argue for is identified with the Force head (SFP1) of the C space (à la Rizzi 1997) which hosts particles that express speech acts and speaker-oriented modality. The second position (SFP2) is an iterative head located lower than the higher Topic. This proposal not only captures facts about the co-occurrence and ordering restrictions of particle clusters, but also some previously unobserved behaviours of particles with quantified noun phrases and different types of questions.

Heritage speakers on the edge : Sentence final particle usage among heritage Cantonese speakers

This thesis investigates the use of sentence final particles (SFPs) in heritage Cantonese. Heritage speakers are early or sequential bilinguals who, in adulthood, are more proficient in the dominant language of their society than in their first, “heritage” language. Heritage speakers exhibit systematic divergence from the baseline (the language they were exposed to), a number of which can be at...

Sentence-final particles in hong kong Cantonese: are they tonal or intonational?

Cantonese is rich in sentence-final particles (SFPs), morphemes serving to show various linguistic or attitudinal meanings. The acoustic manifestations of these SFPs are not yet clear. This paper presents detailed analyses of the fundamental frequency tracings, final F0, final velocity and duration of ten SFPs in Hong Kong Cantonese. The results show that most of these SFPs are very similar to ...

Final Rising and Global Raising in Cantonese Intonation

This study investigates the intonation in Cantonese. Previous studies showed that questions can be cued by final rising in Cantonese. Moreover, the presence of a large amount of sentence final particles suggests that a boundary tone may be an important part of the Cantonese intonation system, which is contrary to Mandarin in which the global raising of F0 is more important than the boundary eff...

Segmentless Sentence-Final Particles in Cantonese: An Experimental Study

A sentence-final particle (SFP, henceforth) is an optional component for a sentence in Cantonese. Traditionally an SFP contains at least one independent segment. The present study proposes that for sentences without a segmental SFP, sentencefinal intonation can act as a segmentless SFP. Systematical acoustic experiment was conducted based on this assumption. Two cross-cutting dichotomies were c...

Sentence-final Particles and Intonation: Two Forms of the Same Thing

This paper argues that the linguistic forms of intonation that have scope over the whole sentence are morphemic, and should therefore be classified as suprasegmental sentence particles. In defense of this hypothesis, a range of studies are reviewed which argue that intonation expresses discourse meanings (or has grammatical functions), and that these meanings (or functions) are comparable to th...
